River Walk’s riverside greenway in the Great Barrington MA downtown center has transformed South Berkshire County’s most devastated riverfront into a National Recreation Trail and local treasure. This community-built and managed trail provides a laboratory for local youth and volunteers to learn about natural resource protection, horticulture, and environmental stewardship. Since 1988, 3000 community volunteers have reclaimed a riverbank once abandoned to PCB contamination and general neglect. They have re-created native habitat, secured public access, removed 400+ tons of debris, and provided a half-mile of artfully crafted riverside walking trail visited by thousands each year. River Walk is a project of the Great Barrington Land Conservancy and cared for by Greenagers. It is home to the William Stanley Overlook and the W.E.B. Du Bois River Park, which is a site on the Upper Housatonic Valley African American Trail.

More Ways You Can Give to River Walk

A Gift of Stock

A gift of stock is a great way to support our mission. Long-term appreciated holdings, such as stocks, bonds or mutual funds may provide greater tax benefits than a cash gift of equivalent value, especially if they have a low-cost basis. You receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of your holdings – even if you bought it for far less. You also avoid capital gains tax – money you’d pay if you liquidated the holding. A gift of closely held stock is also a giving option. Contact Christine Ward at christine@gbland.org for more information.

Memorial and Tribute Giving

Memorial and tribute gifts are common at River Walk. What better way to recognize someone you love than to preserve what they love. Give a gift in honor of someone by entering their name on the donation form and we’ll put that gift to work at River Walk. We will send them a note telling them of your generous gift in their honor. (To donate by check, follow this link.)

Business Partnerships

Located in the center of South Berkshire County’s biggest town, River Walk is visited by residents, children, and tourists from around the country and the world. Its unusual downtown river setting, steeped in natural beauty and remarkable history, makes it a special treasure and one-of-a-kind destination. Our business partners help us in many ways, each according to their ability and talents. Some businesses volunteer employee time and others make financial contributions toward our work. Talk to Christine about how we can work together to make River Walk a better destination for your business, and consider making a donation. (To donate by check, follow this link.)

Volunteer Your Time and Skills

We run on volunteer power. The long hours of our paid staff and Greenagers are multiplied many times over by the hard work of our volunteers; we can’t do it without you. Talk to Christine or visit our volunteer page to see if there is an opportunity for you, your school, or your business. Check out our volunteer opportunities here.
