River Walk is Closed for the 2019 Season

River Walk is closed for the season, following the recent December snowstorm. Thank you Greenager trail master Elia Del Molino and our Greenager apprentices; horticulturalist Heather Cupo; and more than 135 volunteers for a terrific 2019 season. Please join director Christine Ward and the River Walk staff for our annual Earthday workday in April, 2020, when we open again in the spring. Our Treasured Red Oak Breathes Easier

On September 28th, twelve dedicated volunteers worked to save our beloved red oak tree between River Walk and the old Searles School.  Arborist Tom Ingersoll led the effort, laying out the steps needed to support tree health.

Join us for HEARTFLOW

HEARTFLOW–Honoring the Housatonic River

What:   “Heartflow – Honoring the Housatonic River” is a community celebration/procession/ceremony along Housatonic River Walk in Great Barrington.

When:   Saturday, June 22, 2-4 pm

Where:  Beginning at Stanley Park (across from Cumberland Farms) culminating at the W. E. B. Du Bois Rain Garden with stops along the way for information, reflection and creativity.

Who: All are invited to be part of this observance hosted by the Housatonic River Walk.

River Walk Tree ID Challenge: Winners Take Home Trees

River Walk was filled with great spring energy for our River Walk Tree Challenge and Arbor Day/Chalk Art Festival, April 20-26,2019. CLICK

 

Young and old explored the trees of River Walk’s upstream section as part of the Tree ID challenge. Thank you to Wards Nursery for donating two Paper Birch trees for our raffle winners, presented on Arbor Day. Alexander Christoulou won the kids raffle. He promises to let his sister, Sofia, help care for their new tree. Lelia Braun won the adult raffle and donated her tree to River Walk volunteer, Olivia Conforti. Olivia plans to give her birch tree to her dad for Father’s Day.

Upcoming Arbor Events April 20-26

Join our River Walk Tree Challenge and Arbor Day/Chalk Art Festival. Take the River Walk Upstream Tree ID Challenge. April 20-26, 2019. See if you can identify 6 native trees of River Walk’s Upstream Section. Then enter the GB Arbor Day Raffle to win a native tree.

 

Then, celebrate GB Arbor Day with a Chalk Art Festival. Friday, April 26, 2016, noon to 6:00 PM. A tree-centric day hosted by Mason Library. Free and everyone is welcome. A Cultural ArtWeek Event.

Come Bird With Us on River Walk!

THURSDAYS IN MAY

May 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2019. 7:30 am and 6 pm.
Meet at the St Peter’s parking lot entrance.

Grab your binoculars and come focus on spring bird activity along the Housatonic River. The river is a migration corridor. Our habitat provides shelter and food to traveling and nesting bird species.
